Clean sheet
Still no federal government in Belgium. This affects the economy because a government in going concern is limited in the decisions it can take; certain decisions need to be delayed, investments put on hold.
To get out of the deadlock, politicians debate now whether to start the negotiations from a “clean sheet”. That is the credo. That is easy to say, but not easily done. All actions and decisions leave a trace – if not a scar – behind. However, in many cases it may lead to new insights and new perspectives that open new opportunities for progress.
Such techniques are often applied in business as well, for the same reasons of attempting to discover areas of progress, ways to do things differently. Yet, if not traces or scars, hurdles need to be removed. It brings to memory the famous line of the Flemish writer Willem Elsschot “between dream and deed, laws and practicalities remain”. A matter of resolving laws and solving practicalities to get to action, I would say.
Best,
Chris
